Video 27 Calf signals
One of my big lessons in veterinary was I needed to spend more time knowing what the normal healthy signals of ruminants were. I spent far too long focused on disease and sickness. What do healthy animals look like and want?
This is important because it allows us to assess the environment of animals better. Assessing the animals themselves can also mean we get better at picking up sick animals. Early identification of disease is also the cornerstone of better treatment outcomes.
Start with the individual
Begin at the tip of the nose and move slowly back to the tip of the tail. What do you see, what can you hear (coughing). Once it is normal to move on.
If you pick up abnormal signals ask why you might be seeing nasal discharges or raised tails and straining. Don’t ever ignore these signals.
Then assess the group
Look at the group behaviors. Are they exhibiting unusual behaviors (not lying down)? What are you hearing are they coughing? Etc
This is a very simple video above reinforcing the need to know what is normal.
Thought for the day
Practice self-awareness. React to what you see and feel, don’t beat yourself up. Congratulate yourself when things are working and work to make improvements when there not.
