KEEPING ANIMALS HEALTHY
MAKING FARMING BETTER

Hi I'm Tommy The Vet
thanks for visiting my website

I work with the agri-industry, vets and farmers to keep animals healthy and improve herd and flock performance. I now work across all species in research around the gut microbiome and animal health with Precision Microbes Check out our website to find out more  http://WWW.PRECISIONMICROBES.COM

I have worked for 21 years in the animal health industry. I qualified from UCD with a veterinary degree in 2002. Since then I have run a mixed animal veterinary practice, become a cow signals trainer, and also obtained a Grad cert in dairy herd health. I also completed a Nuffield farming scholarship in 2019.

My interests along with animal health include communication, marketing, and leadership

Help Make Farming Better

For the past decade I have been very much focused on disease prevention on farm. Looking at defining systems to make this easier for me as a vet and for my clients to help them have healthy and more profitable herds. I also have become very interested in communication and leadership within Irish agriculture.

My goal is to ‘help make farming better’ by promoting and talking about best practice on herd/flock health. Best practice is all very well but it must be tailored or take into account the practical realities of daily farm life.

In recent years I now work across all animal species and looking at biomes and health with my work with.Precision Microbes

One of the greatest quotes I ever read in the whole area of farm advice was from president Eisenhower, when he said...

‘its easy talk about farming when your pushing a pen not a plough’.

So, for me the advice I give must be simple and achievable, this is where I came up with the concept of ‘being brilliant at the basics’.

Consistent routines at critical points in the farming calendar can make such a difference. As a vet, the aim is not so much to work to make sick animals better but to keep healthy animals healthy.

So, it's all about preventing disease using science and advice to help the farmer achieve their goals. It’s also very much about listening to farmers and working with them to help make farming better.

This means a strong focus on animal husbandry and nutrition. I also carry out a lot of training with farmers and vets around applying best practices in animal health.
